Vegetable Heterosis Technology Seminar Held

From May 3rd to May 5th, the “Thirteenth Five-Year” National Key R&D Program “Heterologous Hybrid Techniques and Hybrid Production of Strong Advantage” was organized in collaboration with the Vegetable Industry Alliance to hold mid-term variety exhibitions and discussions in Shouguang City and Weinan City, Shandong Province. meeting. The meeting summed up the overall progress of the mid-term project, including the use of new technologies, new methods of heterosis, strong new materials created, strong new varieties or combinations of bred, and strong new varieties developed on the topics of tomato, pepper and cucumber. Field exhibitions, observations and special reports were conducted.

It is understood that this project is the first national key R&D project related to vegetable genetics and breeding initiated by the Ministry of Science and Technology. It has been implemented since July 2016. As the lead unit of the project, the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences organizes 40 research backbones from 15 institutions including China Agricultural University, Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry, Northeast Agricultural University, and Huazhong Agricultural University to form a project team. The project team aims to support the optimization and upgrading of China’s vegetable industry, and to meet the urgent demand for strong hybrid superior varieties in production. The five most important vegetable crops of cabbage, cabbage, tomato, pepper, and cucumber are taken as the research object, and vegetables are developed. Heterologous breeding technology and related basic theory research, while shouldering the strong advantage of new varieties breeding tasks.

According to the project chief scientist Li Junming, a researcher at the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the project has developed 16 strong hybrid breeding techniques and created 12 self-intergrity lines, 6 self-incompatible lines, male infertility or 11 females and 8 other excellent materials were selected to breed strong hybrids or combinations of 24, accumulating 305,200 mu. He applied for or obtained 24 invention patents, published 41 papers, and obtained or applied for 12 new variety rights and variety registrations.

A batch of tomato, pepper, and cucumber strong new varieties developed by the project team displayed at the on-site meeting demonstrated good characters of continuous fruit setting, good disease resistance, high yield, good quality, and high commodity rate, which met the market demand. Compared with the control varieties, the economic benefits are good and they are welcomed by the farmers and the market.
