Seed exports increased export reduction

According to the recent data on the import and export of China’s crop seeds from January to September 2017 issued by the China Seed Trade Association (CNSTA) in 2017, the import and export of crop seeds increased in 2017, both in terms of export volume and export value.

According to statistics, from January to September 2017, the total imports of China’s crop seeds reached 62.896 million kg, an increase of 52.28% over the same period of last year; the total import value was 316.992 million U.S. dollars, up 48.67% over the same period of last year. Total exports of 12,667,000 kg, down 36.79%; total exports 90,334,000 US dollars, down 17.83%. The total volume of imports and exports was 407.326 million U.S. dollars, with a deficit of 226.657 million U.S. dollars.

From January to September 2017, the largest imported crop was ryegrass with 27.696 million kg, accounting for 44.03% of the total imports. The United States is the largest source of ryegrass seeds, accounting for about 61%. The largest imported crops are vegetable seeds, amounting to US $ 135.841 million, accounting for 42.85% of the total imports. Japan is the largest source of vegetable seeds for import in China, accounting for about 36% of the total.

From January to September in 2017, the largest exporter of seeds used indica rice, accounting for 8,522,000 kg, accounting for 67.27% of the total export volume. Pakistan is the largest importer of indica rice, accounting for about 62%. The largest export of crops is vegetable seeds, 45.58 million US dollars, accounting for 50.46% of total exports. The United States is the largest importer of Chinese vegetable seeds, accounting for about 32%.

At present, the vegetable seed export market in China is highly concentrated, mainly in 10-15 countries and regions. The export volume of the major vegetable seeds in the top three is always the United States, South Korea and the Netherlands, while the international markets open up are few.
