According to the World Trade Organization’s WTO, the EU will no longer approve the registration of the herbicide furnidone (CAS No 96525-23-4), which will be formally released this autumn in the Official Journal of the European Union.

Furazonin was first approved on January 1, 2004, and the current approval is valid until October 31, 2018. The first approval was carried out under the old regulations (Directive 91/414/EEC) and the review was carried out under the European Union’s new pesticide legislation (EC) No 1107/2009.

According to the requirements of the new regulations for the approval of active substances (see (EC) No 1107/2009, Article 4), the use of plant protection products containing this substance should not cause adverse effects on human health and the environment, the EU comprehensive assessment country and European food The assessment draft of the Security Agency (EFSA) and the results of peer review concluded that the conditions for the approval of the substance were no longer met, and finally decided not to approve the substance.

The main reasons are as follows:

– Based on available data, the potential mutagenicity risk of fumonone cannot be completely excluded and consumer and non-dietary risk assessments have not been conducted.
– On the other hand, the metabolite trifluoroacetic acid of fumonone is expected to remain in the plant body and groundwater. Due to insufficient data on the dossier, the consumer’s exposure assessment of this metabolite cannot be determined.
– In addition, based on the existing research data, the evaluation of endocrine disruption characteristics could not be completed.

In summary, fumonone does not meet the conditions for ratification under the new regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 and the EU no longer approves the substance.
