Considered the most efficient insecticide for the control of Helicoverpa armigera, emamectin benzoate was released for use and commercialization until July 2019 in Brazil. The decision was ratified through Decree 44 of the Department of Agricultural Defense of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply published in the Official Union Gazette.

The publication, signed by the Ministry’s Secretary of Agriculture Defense, Luís Eduardo Rangel, clarified a previous decree (SDA/MAPA Nº 152 from 12/27/2017).

Mapa had received several questions about the deadline cited previously, where it could be interpreted that emamectin benzoate would only be sold until May 2, 2018.

The new decree states clearly the sale release of the product until July of next year for the four companies authorized to import and sell the insecticide in Brazil. They are CCAB Agro, Tide/Prentiss, Ourofino and Macroseeds. The companies have the homologation of the environmental agencies in the six states — Goias, Piaui, Maranhão, Bahia, Mato Grosso, and Mato Grosso do Sul — that released the active ingredient for the control of Helicoverpa armigera.

Syngenta with Proclaim is the only company that will have the definitive registration for emamectin benzoate in the country.

Patricia Severo, coordinator of regulatory issues at Tide/Prentis, said the decision was important to give legal certainty over the issue. She noted that the decree made clear the validity deadline of the emergency product release. “Therefore, farmers will benefit, as they have more options of cost/benefit,” she concluded.
