Meanwhile, important factors are intensifying the urgency of the problem in China:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-content\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 There is much less usable, arable land per capita in China vs US. Worse, rapid industrializaon has\u00a0 signi\ufb01cantly <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/AG.LND.ARBL.HA?locations=CN\">reduced China\u2019s arable land<\/a>, and much of what remains has been degraded or polluted\u00a0 (a <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/agris.fao.org\/agris-search\/search.do?recordID=US201700034952\">2015 study<\/a> found that 19% of China\u2019s soil contains heavy metals)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 The growing middle class in China is exacerbating the problems:<\/span><br \/>\no Per-capita meat consumption risen tremendously (and it still lags US\/Europe)<br \/>\no Growing high-quality produce to meet changing consumer tastes will place even greater stresses on land\/water use than today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-content\">As consumer demand for fresh foods in China grows, new innovations are needed to help farmers save money, improve sustainability, and build trust with a more environmentally conscious middle class whose food tastes are increasingly resembling those in Western cultures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"post-content\"><strong>The path to sustainable intensi\ufb01cation in China<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"post-content\">Agricultural reforms introduced during the 1980s improved food security in China. However, the country\u2019s rapid adoption of modern inputs came at a signi\ufb01cant cost to the environment. Today, Chinese farmers apply synthetic pesticides and fertilizers at much higher rates than other developing countries, even as runo\ufb00 from degr<span style=\"color: #000000;\">aded soils causes <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/2009\/090216\/full\/news.2009.105.html\">signi\ufb01cant damage to water and air quality<\/a>. This chart highligh<\/span>ts the problem:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.agropages.com\/UserFiles\/FCKFile\/zkc_2017-10-09_11-47-22_386.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"post-content\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The rise in synthetic <a class=\"anchor\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.agropages.com\/CompanyDirectory\/CList-2-----1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fertilizer<\/a> and pesticide use in China can be partially attributed to the country\u2019s <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-agriculture-pollution\/china-farm-pollution-worsens-despite-moves-to-curb-excessive-fertilisers-pesticides-idUSKBN0N50L720150414\">growth in fruit and vegetable production<\/a> in recent years. Beijing is beginning to take steps to support alternate production methods. In early 2017, the government announced several new initiatives to <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/china-targets-green-branded-food-041324611.html\">promote \u201cgreen\u201d farming practices<\/a> and <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/usa.chinadaily.com.cn\/epaper\/2017-02\/13\/content_28182560.htm\">increase domestic production of high-quality fruits and vegetables<\/a> while maintaining its goal of zero growth in the use of fertilizers and pesticides by 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"post-content\"><strong>New consumer values: organic, fresh, safe <\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"post-content\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Urban consumers aren\u2019t waing for the government to deliver on its promises. <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pewglobal.org\/files\/2015\/09\/Pew-Research-Center-China-Report-FINAL-September-24-2015.pdf\">Trust in domestically produced food remains low<\/a> after a series of highly publicized food-safety scandals. Many Chinese shoppers are willing to pay a premium for safety, freshness and variety in their diets. The market is responding dramatically to cater to consumers\u2019 obsession with the origin of their food:\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-content\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Surveys show a huge preference \/ pricing premium for organic. For example, consumer\u00a0 excitement surrounding food that can be traced to a <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hoogendoorn.nl\/en\/2016\/video-automated-chinese-greenhouse-promotes-safe-organic-food-2\/\">speci\ufb01c greenhouse<\/a> (and the fact that they\u00a0 want to o\ufb00er tours to show the world)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/934038\/in-china-fake-news-about-food-goes-viral-because-people-find-it-hard-to-trust-anyone\/\"> The weird social media explosion about fake seaweed,<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Walmart talking about using blockchain in China to trace pigs, chickens, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-content\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In recent years, e-commerce has expanded markeng and distribution channels beyond brick and mortar, with major players such as <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yiguo.com\/\">Yiguo<\/a> and <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/miao.tmall.com\/\">Tmall Fresh<\/a> using new business models to connect shoppers with the food products and brands they trust. A 2016 <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/retail\/our-insights\/how-savvy-social-shoppers-are-transforming-chinese-e-commerce\">Euromonitor report<\/a> shows that almost 50%<\/span> of Chinese consumers have purchased food online, with signi\ufb01cant growth expected in the coming years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4 class=\"post-content\"><strong>New innovations can reduce pesticide use and save farmers money<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"post-content\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">China is rushing to <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2017-feeding-china\/\">deploy new technologies<\/a> that support farm income and minimize damage to the environment. Nowhere is this more necessary than in China\u2019s fresh produce sector, which depends heavily on synthetic pesticides.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-content\">One new approach that o\ufb00ers a solution to boosting yields of sustainably grown crops comes from Crop Enhancement, a startup that helps farmers sustain high yields while reducing their pesticide exposure. Pulling from deep expertise in materials science, Crop Enhancement has developed a non-toxic, biodegradable \ufb01lm that coats plant surfaces such as leaves, stems, and fruit to reduce the need for harmful pescides. The product, called CropCoat, can be applied on its own as a microlayer to trees, helping improve crop quality and yield while reducing the frequency of pesticide applications throughout a growing season. CropCoat can also be combined with biological controls such as bene\ufb01cial bacteria, fungi, and viruses to broaden the pest management toolbox.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-content\">It will take ongoing partnerships between agriculture technology companies, food manufacturers, and non-governmental organizaons to bring safer, sustainable agricultural practices to the smallholder. But the opportunity for innovave, e\ufb00ective, nature-derived crop protection in China is huge. Beyond o\ufb00ering growers of high-value crops like cacao and co\ufb00ee a way to minimize or even eliminate the use of pescides while improving yield, \ufb01eld-level technologies can address two key challenges in China: increasing food production and fostering the development of sustainable agricultural practices that are environmentally friendly and economically viable.
