{"id":2403,"date":"2019-09-09T17:27:36","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T09:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.agrinoon.com\/agriculture\/?p=2403"},"modified":"2019-09-09T17:27:36","modified_gmt":"2019-09-09T09:27:36","slug":"first-pea-genome-help-improve-crops-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.agrinoon.com\/agriculture\/2019\/09\/09\/first-pea-genome-help-improve-crops-future\/","title":{"rendered":"First pea genome to help improve crops of the future"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>A global team including scientists from The University of Western Australia has assembled the first genome of the field pea, which provides insight into how the legume evolved and will help aid future improvements of the crop.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The study, published today in\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41588-019-0480-1\">Nature Genetics<\/a><\/em>, has important implications for global nutrition and the sustainability of crops, with field peas providing an important plant-based protein source for human food and animal feed.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Professors David Edwards and Jacqueline Batley from UWA\u2019s School of Biological Sciences and UWA\u2019s Institute of Agriculture were co-investigators in the research and said that the field pea had a much larger and more complex genome compared to other legumes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe pea genome assembly spans about 4.45 thousand million letters,\u201d Professor Edwards said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cBut it\u2019s only with relatively recent technological innovations that we\u2019ve been able to sequence and assemble such large genomes.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Professor Batley said the research built on pioneering concepts of inheritance developed by Gregor Mendel, a 19th century monk.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWith the pea genome sequenced, we can now start to understand the basis for the variation which has evolved,\u201d Professor Batley said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cMendel analysed the inheritance of different pea traits such as wrinkled peas, and he demonstrated that these traits were passed on from one generation to the next, a foundation for Darwin\u2019s later discoveries in evolution.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cMore than 150 years later, we\u2019ve now assembled the pea genome and can start to understand the DNA basis of the inheritance observed by Mendel.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This research was supported by the Australian Grains Research and Development Corporation and by the Australian Research Council.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"tl clearfix mt10\">\n<h4 class=\"p-source c-999 cb pt5\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Source:\u00a0<a class=\"c-orange fs16\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/news.agropages.com\/Media\/MediaIndex-1340.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Western Australia<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A global team including scientists from The University of Western Australia has assembled the first genome of the field pea, which provides insight into how the legume evolved and will help aid future improvements of the crop.
