{"id":2293,"date":"2019-07-24T17:28:58","date_gmt":"2019-07-24T09:28:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.agrinoon.com\/agriculture\/?p=2293"},"modified":"2019-07-24T17:28:58","modified_gmt":"2019-07-24T09:28:58","slug":"scientists-identify-tr4-resistant-bananas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.agrinoon.com\/agriculture\/2019\/07\/24\/scientists-identify-tr4-resistant-bananas\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists identify TR4-resistant bananas"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/img.agropages.com\/UserFiles\/FCKFile\/zkc_2019-07-23_07-15-02_534.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"314\" \/><\/div>\n<div><em>Research into disease resistance at WUR has apparently involved the testing of around 20,000 individual plants (Photo: Fernando Alexander Garc\u00eda-Bastidas)<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nThe international banana industry is apparently a major step closer to salvation after scientists revealed they are closer than ever to developing fruit that is immune to TR4, a strain of the fungal disease fusarium wilt.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>With TR4 threatening to wipe out production of the world\u2019s most commonly sold variety, Cavendish, new and resistant cultivars that can resist the disease have now been identified by researchers in the Netherlands, Eurofruit has learned.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Under the direction of leading tropical phytopathology expert Professor Gert Kema, a team of scientists at Wageningen University &amp; Research has assessed the potential resistance of many different types of banana from around the world, as well as genetically modified varieties and chance mutations.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>According to agronomic engineer and PhD student Fernando Alexander Garc\u00eda-Bastidas, a key member of the project team, a number of resistant cultivars have already been found \u2013 and likewise sources of resistance to the disease \u2013 all of which can be used in subsequent breeding programmes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The group\u2019s ultimate goal, he explains, is to develop a commercially viable replacement for Cavendish, a variety that not only can fight off TR4 but also at least match today\u2019s market leader in terms of commercial appeal, marketability and robustness in the supply chain.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Over the past six years, Garc\u00eda-Bastidas has played a central role in screening more than 250 different banana types, coming up with a series of assessment protocols and testing 20,000 individual plants.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIf one of those is resistant and meets the market expectations, we have a replacement for Cavendish,\u201d he tells Eurofruit.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Replacement is, of course, not a new phenomenon for the international banana trade, which saw Cavendish itself take over from the prevalent Gros Michel in the previous century after the latter was floored by TR4\u2019s own predecessor TR1.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe idea is to find firstly replacements for Cavendish and secondly new sources of resistance for breeding,\u201d Garc\u00eda-Bastidas, referring to the plan as an exercise in determining \u201cthe genetics and mechanisms\u201d of banana resistance. \u201cI want to develop a new banana \u2013 not GMO \u2013 to help with this problem.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Last November, researchers at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia \u2013 who have partnered with Kema\u2019s team \u2013 published the results of a trial in which one genetically modified Cavendish plant carrying a replacement gene from a wild banana variety showed full resistance to TR4.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Garc\u00eda-Bastidas and Professor Kema were both speaking at last weekend\u2019s first-ever International Congress of Plant Pathology in Boston.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"tl clearfix mt10\">\n<h4 class=\"p-source c-999 cb pt5\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Source<\/strong>:\u00a0<a class=\"c-orange fs16\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/news.agropages.com\/Media\/MediaIndex-530.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fruitnet.com<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Research into disease resistance at WUR has apparently involved the testing of around 20,000 individual plants (Photo: Fernando Alexander Garc\u00eda-Bastidas) The international banana industry is apparently a major step closer to salvation after scientists revealed they are closer than ever to developing fruit that is immune to TR4, a strain of the fungal disease fusarium&hellip;
