{"id":1978,"date":"2019-03-22T17:18:03","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T09:18:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.agrinoon.com\/agriculture\/?p=1978"},"modified":"2019-03-22T17:18:03","modified_gmt":"2019-03-22T09:18:03","slug":"breakthrough-fighting-plant-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.agrinoon.com\/agriculture\/2019\/03\/22\/breakthrough-fighting-plant-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Breakthrough in fighting plant disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The findings could lead to new ways of preventing disease in crops \u2013 of great potential benefit to farmers.\n<\/div>\n<div>Led by the University of Sheffield (UK), the research team identified, for the first time, specific locations (loci) within a plant\u2019s chromosomes that impart disease resistance to their offspring by undergoing a reversible biochemical modification known as DNA methylation, in response of pathogen attack.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Published in the journal eLife, the research identifies four DNA loci that control disease resistance against a common plant pathogen called downy mildew. Importantly, this resistance was not associated with any negative effects on growth or resistance against other environmental stresses.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>La Trobe University Research Fellow Dr Ritushree Jain said that when plants are repetitively attacked by pathogens, they develop a \u2018memory\u2019 (known as priming in plants) of this encounter which enables them to fight efficiently when attacked again.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cOne of the mechanisms for transferring this \u2018memory\u2019 to their next generation via seeds is DNA methylation,\u201d Dr Jain said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt is an epigenetic phenomenon &#8211; meaning there is no change in the DNA sequence.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Dr Jain explained the potential benefit to farmers these findings offer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cNot only could this significant discovery lead to new ways of preventing disease in important crops, but it could also help reduce our reliance on pesticides,\u201d Dr Jain said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Lead researcher Professor Jurriaan Ton from the University of Sheffield\u2019s P3 Plant Production and Protection Centre said findings from the study pave the way for further research into how epigenetics can help to improve disease resistance in food crops.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe now hope to use this study to carry out further research to understand how these epigenetic loci control so many different defence genes,\u201d Professor Ton said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe are also keen to participate in more translational studies, in order to find out whether epigenetics can be used to prime disease resistance in crops that are vital to food supplies around the world.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Led by the University of Sheffield in the UK, the research was conducted in collaboration with La Trobe University, PSL University (Paris) and the Technical University of Munich (Germany).<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"tl clearfix mt10\">\n<h4 class=\"p-source c-999 cb pt5\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Source<\/strong>:\u00a0<a class=\"c-orange fs16\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/news.agropages.com\/Media\/MediaIndex-6402.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La Trobe University<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The findings could lead to new ways of preventing disease in crops \u2013 of great potential benefit to farmers.
