The new publication reveals that the ancestral plant\u2019s genome has evolved more quickly than usual, driven largely by repeats.<br data-filtered=\"filtered\" \/><br data-filtered=\"filtered\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"post-content\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The paper, \u201c<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature24486\">Genome sequence of the progenitor of the wheat D genome <em>Aegilops tauschii<\/em><\/a>,\u201d comes from senior author Jan Dvo\u0159\u00e1k; lead authors Ming-<\/span>Cheng Luo, Yong Gu, Daniela Puiu, Hao Wang, and Sven Twardziok; and collaborators. \u201c<em>Aegilops tauschii<\/em> is the diploid progenitor of the D genome of hexaploid wheat,\u201d the scientists note. \u201cThe large size and highly repetitive nature of the <em>Ae. tauschii<\/em> genome has until now precluded the development of a reference-quality genome sequence.\u201d<br data-filtered=\"filtered\" \/><br data-filtered=\"filtered\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"post-content\">To tackle this difficult genome, the team used a number of genome analysis technologies, including SMRT Sequencing, BAC sequencing, optical mapping, and more. Scientists from Johns Hopkins contributed 35-fold PacBio coverage of the <em>Ae. tauschii<\/em> genome. It is a 4.3 Gb in size and organized into seven chromosomes.<br data-filtered=\"filtered\" \/><br data-filtered=\"filtered\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"post-content\">With a high-quality assembly in hand, the team turned to exploring unique features of the ancestral wheat genome. \u201cCompared to other sequenced plant genomes \u2026 the <em>Ae. tauschii<\/em> genome contains unprecedented amounts of very similar repeated sequences,\u201d the scientists report.
