NATESC predicts slight third-generation armyworm occurrence for 2017 in China

Keywords: NATESC , third-generation armyworm

On 26 July, 2017, China’s National Agro-Tech Extension and Service Centre (NATESC) released its 2017 Third-generation Armyworm Occurrence Prediction. It estimated slight strikes around the country, with high concentration in parts of Huang-Huai-Hai region and Northeast China given the large local quantities of adult armyworm. The national occurrence area is predicted to total 1.0 million ha (15.0 million mu). Occurrence of larvae may peak between late July and mid-Aug.

The total occurrence area of second-generation armyworm reached 1.6 million ha (24.0 million mu) in 2017, up by 39.7% YoY. Yet, the quantity of adult armyworm captured per unit area remained relatively low. Since mid-July, northern regions have witnessed 5-7 days of high temperatures, which help restrain the growth of armyworm to some extent.
